Quick update and pictures!

Wow! What a whirlwind the last two days have been. Wish I had more time to update on everything that happened yesterday and today. Hoping to have more than 5 minutes of free time tomorrow so I can tell some great stories! But wanted to post a few pictures now (: these are from our adventure from the airport, and today at the clinic!

Standing outside the Houston airport, freezing!

Crammed in the van on the way to the not so reserved hotel.

We made it!

First all group meeting

More meeting..

Heading out for the day!

Some of our awesome team!

They rode like this the entire way to the village!!

Stopped to pick up packaged safe water for the day!

The shop where we got our water

Crammed in the trucks for our long long drive!

Yes, we drove through rivers to get to the village. And yes, that is the best shape of the roads!

Here are a few pictures of things along the road...

And here are a bunch from the village today! We go back there again tomorrow!

And a few pictures of our trucks stuck on the hill, spinning in the deepest, muckiest, mud I've ever seen... These pictures don't do it justice! A great story to tell though (:
This last picture is some of us trying to build a path on the mud for the truck!

Night one: adventures continued

Well, after finally arriving safely in Houston, we had more line waiting to do. We spent more time in lines yesterday than we did traveling. Crazy! We sat at our gate for another hour plus after we landed while waiting for our hotel vouchers and assignments (which they were required to give us since our issues were mechanical). The lady who helped us told us she could get rooms for 15 of us at one hotel, but that one of us was going to have to go to another hotel. No problem, right? Wrong. Poor Johnathon had an awful night. The hotel that United sent him to with a young couple from our flight was rentable by the hour, if you catch what I'm saying... There were fights in the parking lot and gun shots. After seeing his room (filthy, no sheets, and obviously hadn't been cleaned in several...errr... Um... Uses), he heard a knock on his door. It was the couple he had gotten there with and they were going back to the airport to sleep there as it seemed like a safer place. Thinking they could get back to the gate and sleep on some benches, they left. Thank God they made it in and out of the hotel safely! Unacceptable United. Absolutely awful. When they finally got back to the airport, security wouldn't let them through to get to the gates. They had to sleep out by check in...
Now the rest of our group were thinking to ourselves, lucky Johnathon got a room to himself and was probably sleeping while we had an adventure of our own. Little did we know, he was experiencing a much worse night than we did.
The rest of our group headed out to the curb to wait for a shuttle to the econolodge. We waited, and waited. Saw many of the charter bus style ones come for many other hotels. Finally, the econolodge van arrived. We all couldn't wait to get to the hotel and get in bed! There were 15 of us and it was a 15 passenger van. We would have to do a little squeezing, but doable! Then we opened the doors... Only 6 seats in the back. They had taken out the back couple rows of seats. Of course! All we could do is laugh. The driver said he would take us all if we could climb in and share seats nd share the back empty space with suitcases, so we did! Adventure number 347 of the day!
Upon arriving at our hotel, we piled into the lobby and awaited being given our room assignments. Woohoo! So close! Dave walked up to the counter and the man told him, oh we don't have those rooms for you. We only have one room. So after much debate, he told us he could give us 2 rooms (even though the airline claimed to have booked 8 rooms for us! Ugh united!!) and they had 2 roll aways. (I made a comment about Mary and Joseph and that maybe we could be offered a stable out back with the animals. With everyone so tired and delirious, it seemed much funnier then...) I stepped outside to call united and see what they could do about refunding us hotel costs if we went elsewhere to get rooms and saw a high speed car chase, saw many other cops, and heard so many sirens. Perfect place to be! Needless to stay, I quickly decided to finish my phone call indoors. So after putting as many people as we could in those 2 rooms, we called a holiday inn express down the street and purchased a few rooms for the rest of us. We got a ride to the other hotel, and I tell ya, I have never been more excited to be inside of a hotel in the ghetto. My shower and bed last night felt like heaven (and although I am fairly certain that any other day of the year I would have been hesitant to climb in that bed, I could not get in it fast enough). We only got to sleep 3 hours. But hey, 3 hours is better than nothing! Jacque and I made the best of it and laughed at our crazy day before drifting off to a deep heavy all too short sleep.

Guatemala bound ... Tomorrow!

On our flight to Houston (when we finally got up in the air), I decided to type up a blog entry in my notepad thinking I could copy and paste it into my blog when I finally arrived.. But apparently my iPhone had a different idea (; as with many other obstacles today! Thank goodness for screen shots to capture what I had already written!

The end of our day has ended up even more eventful, but with having to be up in a few hours, I'll add more about our exciting night tomorrow! But for now, it's time to get a little shut eye!

And the adventure begins!

After arriving at the airport at 5 am and getting almost all the way through our group check in, the poor lady helping us hit a wrong button and lost all of the work for the 16 of us. She had to start all over! Passports, bag check ins and all. She waived second check bag fee for all of us and let those who wanted to check our carry ons. So nice!
After getting through security, we checked the screen and it said our flight was delayed 10 minutes. Not too shabby! By the time we got to our gate, it was 3 hours... Okay, we can handle that... Good thing we have that extended 6.5 hour layover in Houston!
As time has gone on, our departure time has continued to get pushed back.. Later and later. Now our departure time is 245, which means we will miss our connecting flight to Guatemala City. Oh what an adventure this is turning out to be already!

We've kind of posted up and are just hanging out here. Hoping to figure out a plan with the travel agent, thank goodness for Dave and Laurie (our group leaders who have done this trip many times!) !!

Preparations: Packing Party

We had our last small group meeting tonight before we leave. We had boxes of vitamins, medicines, swing set supplies, tools, beanie babies, balloons, and so much more! Seeing everything laid out and packing it all into what will be our checked bags was so exciting. It's finally setting in that we leave soon!

Here is a snapshot of some packed bags!

Eastlake CC put together little gift bags for each of us. So sweet! Full of goodies that will come in handy. TP (toilets don't have public TP there! Some of the things I never would have thought of... Hope I can remember to take the roll with me when I go!), sour patch kids and playing cards (both of which will come in handy for our 6.5 hour layover and our afternoons with the kids in the villages!), bug spray, hand sanitizer, sun screen, and other thoughtful travel size items! Hard to believe that Saturday morning at 5 am our true adventure begins!

On a side note, I am making sure to extra enjoy my comfy bed and puppy cuddles on my last few nights before the trip! Nothing like some anticipated time away in another country with many unknowns to make you appreciate the comforts of home!

(What a love bug!! Cutie Moose gives some of the best cuddles.)

Preparations: Balloon Edition

Last week we spent our small group time learning how to make balloon animals! On past trips, they have been very popular with the kids and so we had someone come and teach our group! We learned how to make dogs, bunnies, giraffes, flowers, swords, and had many laughs. Some of us certainly do not have clown careers awaiting when we get back (; nonetheless, the children will love to receive anything we can make, no matter how short necked our giraffes are, or long necked we make our dogs!

Matt even made me a special flower!

We leave in just 5 days!! Praising God for all the people who are coming on our trip and I am looking forward to seeing Him work through all of us.
I am so thankful for all my friends and family who have supported me and made it possible to go and serve.
